THE WITHDRAW SERIES

The withdraw series is my graduation project for the Rietveld Academy. It is a series of conceptual furniture that addresses interpersonal interaction. Through the use of the furniture individuals can choose not to participate in the social interaction normally taking place. The furniture offers physical security and places one in the role of observer. The withdraw series comprises several pieces of furniture of which I have realised two, which I will further describe. The first piece consists of a desk with a window attached to it. The window has an iconic and associative value within architecture, representing intervention and transparency. By directly connecting this icon to a personal workspace, an interesting perspective emerges for both the user and the passerby. The second piece consists of a tall cabinet in which one can stand for security. Again, one has the choice to avoid interaction with others. One can assume the role of observer and relinquish the role of participant.
